Friendship by element

Every Sun sign belongs to one of four elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The two elements say a lot about how a friendship feels.

Fire and Fire · Passionate but volatile

You're adventure buddies who rarely turn down a dare. The friendship runs on shared plans and a bit of friendly competition, and you're never bored together.

Fire and Air · Energizing and dynamic

This is one of the zodiac's great friendships. You bring out each other's wit and sense of adventure, and it stays fresh because you keep handing each other new ideas.

Fire and Earth · Challenging but grounding

You admire each other for the things you can't do yourselves. Earth keeps Fire's feet on the ground, and Fire stops Earth from playing it too safe.

Fire and Water · Steamy but emotionally complex

This is often a surprising friendship. You notice sides of each other that most people miss, and it works best when there's room for both doing things and talking things through.

Earth and Earth · Stable and dependable

Reliable and long lasting, this is the friend who shows up at 3 AM without being asked. You build trust by always being there, and that trust rarely breaks.

Earth and Air · Different wavelengths, growth potential

You challenge each other's assumptions, so this friendship is more about growing than about comfort. It isn't always easy, but you'll learn a lot from each other.

Earth and Water · Nurturing and secure

This is a quiet but strong friendship. You look after each other in practical ways, and the trust, built by turning up again and again, runs deep.

Air and Air · Intellectually stimulating

You bond over curiosity and long, wandering conversations, and you keep introducing each other to new ideas and people. It feels light, but it lasts longer than you'd expect.

Air and Water · Emotional meets mental

This friendship widens both of your worlds. Water helps Air find its empathy, and Air helps Water step back and see the bigger picture. Patience and real interest in how the other thinks go a long way.

Water and Water · Deeply empathic but can drown

This friendship feels like home. You understand each other's inner world like few people can, the care is real, and the loyalty is fierce. Just remember to come up for air together now and then.

Common questions

How do you work out friendship compatibility from birthdays?

Each birthday gives a Sun sign and a Life Path number. The two Sun signs set the element match (Fire, Earth, Air or Water) and the angle between the signs, and the two Life Paths add a numerology match. Together they give the score and the reading.

Which zodiac signs make the best friends?

Signs of the same element, and Fire with Air, tend to get on most easily because they share a pace. Earth and Water are a quietly strong pair too. Harder matches, like Fire with Water, are often the friendships you learn the most from.

Does my friend need an account?

No. This page compares two birthdays without an account. If you make a free account you get your own compare link, so friends can add their own birthday and you both see the match.

Can my friend see my birthday?

Never. Someone who opens your compare link sees your first name and Sun sign. Connected friends also see your Moon and Rising signs, but no one sees your birth date, time or place.
