What your Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through when you were born. Where your Sun sign describes the self you show and grow into, your Moon sign describes your inner life: what you need to feel safe, how you react when you are tired or hurt, and what comforts you.
It is often the placement people recognise themselves in most. Two people with the same Sun sign can feel very different inside because their Moons are in different signs.
Do you need your birth time?
Usually not. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so for most birthdays the date alone gives the answer.

No. The Moon sign is which part of the zodiac the Moon was in. The phase is how much of it was lit, which depends on its angle to the Sun.
