Waning Crescent
Rest and reflect
Next Waning Crescent: Sun, November 1 to Mon, November 9 (UTC)
Only a thin crescent remains, visible before dawn. The waning crescent is for rest, reflection and preparing for the next cycle.
The meaning of the waning crescent
In the last days of the cycle, the Moon is a thin crescent in the early morning sky. This is sometimes called the balsamic moon: a time of rest and recovery.
Do less on purpose. Sleep, reflect and let ideas for the next cycle arrive without forcing them.
The last quarter cleared space. The crescent leaves that space empty for a few days. It can feel flat or restless, especially if you are used to always working on something. Treat the quiet as part of the plan, the way a field is left fallow before the next planting.
Notice what keeps surfacing while you rest: a place you think about, a person you miss, a project you keep half planning. Those are often the seeds the next new moon will ask you to name.
The waning crescent in the sky
- Disc lit
- 49 to 1%, shrinking each morning
- Angle from the Sun
- Between 270° and 360°
- Rises
- Before dawn, between midnight and sunrise
- Sets
- In the afternoon, between midday and sunset
- Northern Hemisphere
- Lit on the left, curved like a C
- Southern Hemisphere
- Lit on the right, like a backward C
- Near the equator
- It lies on its back like a bowl, low in the east before sunrise.
The angle is measured from the Sun eastward to the Moon. Rise and set times are local and shift with the season and your latitude.
Waning Crescent rituals
- ✦Take a real rest: a slow morning, a nap, an early night.
- ✦Journal about the whole cycle, from new moon to now.
- ✦Meditate or sit quietly for ten minutes.
In love
Gentle time together, or time alone to recharge. Both are valid now. Keep plans low key and let conversations wander, without trying to settle anything big before the new moon.
In work and money
Pace yourself and keep the calendar light. Save big launches for after the new moon. Use these days to tidy files and jot down ideas for next month without committing to any of them yet.
What to avoid during the waning crescent
- ×Forcing a decision just to feel productive.
- ×Filling every free evening with plans.
- ×Judging the past month harshly. Look back with curiosity.
Journal prompts
- “What do I need in order to feel rested and ready?”
- “What am I glad to leave behind with this cycle?”
- “Which idea keeps returning when I am quiet?”
Dane Rudhyar’s lunation type: Balsamic
Born under the waning crescent
Rudhyar’s Balsamic type has the Moon 315° to 360° from the Sun, in the last 45° before the new moon. It is read as a reflective, future-minded temperament with a strong inner life and a sense of having something to finish or pass on. People with this phase are often described as wise beyond their years, and some feel most at home in the quiet hours.
In natal astrology the phase comes from the Sun-Moon angle in eight bands of 45°, so it can differ slightly from the phase you would have seen that night. Because the band starts at 315°, people born in the first days of the waning crescent seen in the sky count as the Last Quarter type. Common questions
When is the next waning crescent?
The next waning crescent is Sun, November 1 to Mon, November 9 (UTC). The one after that is Tue, December 1 to Wed, December 9.
How long does the waning crescent phase last?
About seven days, from the last quarter to the new moon. It happens once every lunar cycle of about 29.5 days.
Where do I look for the waning crescent?
Look east before dawn. The crescent rises a few hours before the Sun and fades into daylight.
How is the waning crescent different from the waxing crescent?
They are mirror images. The waxing crescent appears in the west after sunset and grows each evening. The waning crescent rises in the east before dawn and shrinks each morning, lit on the opposite side. Astrologers read the first as a start and the second as a rest before the next start.
What comes after the waning crescent?
The new moon, when the Moon passes the Sun and disappears from view for a day or two. A fresh lunar cycle starts there.
What does it mean to be born under the waning crescent?
It means you were born in the last 45° of the cycle, with the Moon between 315° and 360° from the Sun. Rudhyar called it the Balsamic type and linked it with reflection, release and a feeling of preparing the way for something new.
